Education
In addition to addressing the challenges of educating learners with special needs, the Education segment of AWAKENING MINDS© also highlights innovative teaching strategies and tools that are effective for all learners. These innovations have been inspired by my continuous efforts to identify ways to transform learning, particularly in the area of literacy, into a fun, hands-on and accessible experience for Sebastien, my autistic son.
The Education segment of AWAKENING MINDS© comprises:
- Books: Two inspiring books on autism by Choo Kah Ying
- A beautifully illustrated picture book (for children)
- a general reference book containing her journey of raising her autistic son and practical suggestions for caregivers and educators.
- Workshops: Insightful, interactive and practical workshops for caregivers and educators, which deal with: the complexity of autism; effective strategies for managing and working with learners with special needs; the challenges of raising children with special needs; as well as the design and implementation of learning programmes, lesson plans and learning aids.
- Consultations: Customised services to address: a) the needs of specific students and teachers in classroom settings; b) the wide-ranging challenges of autistic children and their families in home settings.
- Learning Materials: General and customised tactile learning materials (ranging from alphabets to worksheets and mini-storybooks) that allow learners to touch and manipulate abstract concepts such as language and numbers, with innovative suggestions for their usage. Customised learning materials can be created to cover a wide range of learners: a) typical children, b) children and youths with special needs and even c) adults learning English as a Foreign Language.
